Our School

Comprising the vwo, havo and mavo streams, Pieter Groen is part of Andreas College, a secondary school in Katwijk.

The name of Pieter Groen originates from the historic figure of Pieter Willemsz Groen. Born in Katwijk in 1808, he was a sailor whose ship was wrecked off the island of Tristan da Cunha. Having decided to stay there, he later became Governor of the island. He was referred to as the ‘uncrowned King of Tristan da Cunha’. Our logo shows the crown as a sign of leadership.

Education

Pieter Groen offers education at vwo, havo and mavo level based on the advice given to pupils at primary school. In addition, there is a range of options to ensure a proper match with pupils’ levels of performance and interests. Mavo/havo pupils opt for extra lessons in sports, musicals or technical education while havo/vwo and vwo pupils have a choice of sports, musicals or science.

Bilingual education

Bilingual education is available at Pieter Groen in all three streams. At havo and vwo level this means that pupils are given at least 50% of lessons in English, with a minimum of 30% at mavo level. Internationalisation is a fixed component of bilingual eduction: each year pupils focus on the outside world as part of their curriculum and in the form of a school trip.

Our hometown

Our school is situated in Katwijk, a seaside town close to a number of large Dutch cities. Katwijk is the proud owner of the most beautiful boulevard in The Netherlands. It is the ideal place for hiking, cycling, or shopping. A wide range of restaurants and beach pavilions are ready to pamper you with coffee and delicious meals after a day spent at the beach or in the shopping centre.
